Since Adelynn and Sarah were born they’ve been easily mistaken for one another of course, to the point that for quite sometime it was hard to tell if they knew their name at all! They would answer to both names.(Our friends, the Joncas twins, told us that even at 18 years old they still answer to both their brothers name and their own!)
I would practice Adelynn and Sarah, pointing to their own little body and stating their name, then pointing to me and stating, “Momma”, but still when we quizzed them on members of the family and they could get the whole family right (OK, not the whole family when they see Emily or Anna they still say “EmilyAnn”, or “Emna”- what a special day it will be to Emily and Anna when they know who THEY ARE), but when we asked “Where’s Sarah?” Sarah would point to Addie or “Where’s Addie?” Addie would point to Sarah. Hee hee! Everyone else can hardly tell them apart so why should they be able to, huh? The most darling part is when they started so endearingly to call each other by name, “Sies” (long “e”, hard “s”, Which being translated is Sis). So darling. Of course it was a breathtaking moment when I heard Sarah first say, “Addie” to her sister. And so exciting when Adelynn first pronounced, “Sarah” with her babyhood accent but very understandable as we were getting her out of her crib from a nap and she immediately checked on Sissie to see if she was awake also. It seemed they were really getting closer to knowing their names, identifying themselves!
Then yesterday as I had just picked the babies up out of their beds from naptime and was in a rush to get out the door, I went to put a hoodie on a baby, then realized these hoodies had their names on the back, I had to get it right. I looked at the labeled shirt, “Adelynn”, I instantly asked out loud to Clara beside me “OK, which baby is this?” (Clara can’t always tell either – none of us can!) “Adtie” came the clear, unmistakable voice from the baby in my arms! My instinct was to turn her around and look into her eyes but then I remembered the back of the head hair swirl identification trick and sure enough it was Adelynn!! She had told me!!! She had told me who she was!!!!!
I know there are many precious milestones in the life of our babies, sitting up, crawling, walking, talking, but this had to be one of the sweetest ever to me.
Somehow in the midst of busy life, confusion at times, a hurried pace, many people calling her the wrong name, mistaken identity, she had found her own. She knows who she is, she knows her name. That is just one step closer to her discovery that she is a deeply valued, irreplaceable, highly unique, ultimately precious individual, our Adelynn. No one, not even her identical twin sister, could be exactly like her. Not one person in all the whole world over (a billion times over) will have her same personality, same gifts & talents, amazing strengths and humble weaknesses, not one other person over the whole planet will have her same heart, the hopes that will well up in her being as she grows, her own mission in life, the will and power she alone will have to achieve her dreams. She is herself, the one and only.
I wish that discovery for every one of you. To discover who you are. To discover who you are will add meaning, power, revelation, wonder, joy, purpose, understanding to your life and increase your commitment to be the best YOU you can possible BE.
To the ONE and ONLY YOU!!!
Love, CaMarie and Crew
